What Is Out of Home Advertising?: A Complete Guide for Marketers
You've seen it a thousand times today and probably didn't even register half of it. That billboard on your commute, the poster at the bus stop, the digital screen in the mall, the banner at the airport. That's out of home advertising, and it's one of the oldest yet most misunderstood forms of marketing we work with.
What is OOH advertising
Out of home advertising, what people in the industry call OOH, is any advertising that reaches consumers while they're outside their homes. Sounds simple enough, right? But after having run campaigns in quite a few markets, from KIGALI to BUJUMBURA , from local neighborhood activations to massive international rollouts, we can tell you there's nothing simple about doing it well.
The origin of OOH
While everyone obsesses over Instagram ads and TikTok campaigns, out of home advertising has been growing consistently. We're talking about a medium that's been around since ancient Rome carved promotional messages on stone tablets.
In ancient Rome, once the gladiators and venatores had been hired, they needed to be made known. Various posters were displayed to inform the public not only about the munera (games), but also about their sponsors, the ludus (training school) where the gladiators were trained, as well as the conditions and number of participants. Under a hot climate such as that of Italy, awnings were highly appreciated and were often mentioned on these advertisements.
Detailed manuals listing the victories and defeats of the gladiators could also be obtained; unfortunately, none of these documents have survived. However, thanks to the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE, we now possess several posters (or rather, handwritten notices) announcing shows in Pompeii.

The graffiti above comes from Pompeii and advertises a munus held in the nearby city of Nola. The image depicts a Thracian with a small shield (on the right) fighting a secutor, the usual pairing of these gladiators. The text reads:

The following announcements also come from Pompeii and promote various munera (games). Several organizers of these games are mentioned in multiple notices and were clearly important figures in the city.
